Classic screw fixing or modern clip system? Advantages and disadvantages at a glance

Traditional screw fastening or modern clip system?
You’ve already planned your deck in your mind, but when it comes to the substructure and the associated fastening of the decking boards, there’s still a big question mark? That’s understandable — there are a few key factors to consider to ensure a long-lasting and stable deck.
The substructure forms the foundation of any deck and therefore requires careful planning. After properly preparing the base, the choice of adjustable pedestals must be made according to the decking material. Whether stone slabs, WPC or timber boards — our product range already offers the right adjustable pedestals for your project.
If you choose a timber deck, you have the option of fastening the boards either directly or with a concealed fastening system. This decision essentially depends on the desired look, durability and the effort required for installation.
In the following sections, we explain the differences between these fastening methods, outline their advantages and disadvantages, and provide an overview of the products we offer for each system.

Not all wood is the same!
Do you still need more information about which types of wood are suitable for decking and how to fasten them correctly? Whether domestic, tropical or thermally modified timber — take a look at our fastening recommendations and make your choice:
Direct fastening:
One of the most common and well-known methods for installing decking boards is visible screwing. With direct fastening, special decking screws are drilled straight through the wood of the board, creating a visible connection to the substructure. This means no additional mounting systems or clips are required — however, the visible screw heads may be considered aesthetically unappealing and should therefore be taken into account when choosing the fastening method.
High-quality stainless steel screws, such as Terrassotec screws, are the first choice for this method. They ensure durability, stability and corrosion resistance.
Another advantage: repair work can be carried out more easily, as individual boards can be removed and replaced if necessary.
Advantages
- Quick and easy installation
- Stable and secure connection
- Cost-effective solution
- Easy replacement of individual boards
Disadvantages
- Visible screw heads (possible risk of injury)
- Wood may crack, split or warp over time
- Moisture can affect the screw holes in the long run

Hidden fastening:
Would you prefer a clean decking surface without visible screws? Then hidden fastening is the ideal solution for your project!
The biggest advantage is that the decking boards can be installed without any visible screws on the surface, resulting in a clean and harmonious appearance. In this method, the fasteners are concealed and therefore invisible to the naked eye.
This is typically achieved using clips (e.g. Terrassenclip RI4) or system holders (e.g. Twin system clip), which are attached to the decking boards or to the substructure made of wood or aluminium. The result is a perfectly even surface without visible screw heads.
In addition, hidden fastening contributes to structural wood protection by significantly reducing the risk of rot or mould formation.
Advantages
- Visually appealing finish with no visible screws
- Even and smooth decking surface
- Supports structural wood protection
Disadvantages
- Installation can be more complex and time-consuming due to multiple steps
- Higher costs because of additional fastening components
- May require special decking boards (e.g. with grooves)
- Not suitable for every type of wood (mainly designed for domestic wood species)

Which fastening method will you choose?
The decision between direct/visible or hidden/invisible fastening of wooden decking boards ultimately depends on your individual priorities, the specific conditions of your project and, last but not least, the type of wood you select.
Do you value a clean and elegant appearance and don’t mind putting in a little extra effort, or do you prefer a quick and straightforward installation?
Both methods are suitable – the choice is yours. We’ll be happy to support you and help you find the best solution for your project.
