Are self-tapping wood construction screws suitable for impact screwdrivers?

Screws with a length of 300 mm and above are being increasingly used in the solid wood industry, which often uses large-format 5-, 7- and 9-ply CLT panels and heavy glulam beams as well as glulam supports. Impact screwdrivers have turned out to be practical tools for installing screws. However, it should be noted in this regard that, with hardwoods and also with 4" screws without pre-drilling, the impact screwdriver may pull out the screws or unscrew the heads. Furthermore, this can put a great strain on the user’s hand, wrist and arm due to the lack of torque.

On the other hand, cordless impact screwdrivers have become more and more popular over the past 15 years and have proven themselves as effective in these cases. When they feel resistance, the continuous rotational movement of the internal mechanism is activated, which generates a much higher torque than a drill. This makes installation easier, but does it affect the performance of the screw? For this purpose, Eurotec wood construction screws have been installed using both methods and tested for comparison, both for extraction and tension. After meeting the basic EOTA requirements, it was found that impact screwdrivers do not affect the mechanical performance of the self-tapping screw at all.
